About the Khaki Campbell breed

The Khaki Campbell breed was developed by Mrs Adele Campbell of England early last

century as a dual purpose (egg and meat) breed.  In developing the Khaki Campbell, Mrs

Campbell used the Rouen (a heavy meat breed) for substance; the Indian Runner for egg

production; and the Mallard for foraging ability.

The result was a medium size bird that excelled

in egg production and foraging ability.

Text Box: Usually when people refer to ducks they are thinking of the Muscovy, a large, heavy breed that produces a small number of strong flavoured eggs.
Muscovies are not true ducks (they are genetically more closely related to geese) and when crossed with other breeds of true duck, produce mostly infertile offspring.

Khaki Campbells hold the world record for egg

production (for all breeds of poultry including

chooks).  The eggs have pearly white shells and

are of superb flavour for eating (any-one who

tells you they don’t like the flavour of duck eggs

has obviously never tasted a Khaki Campbell

duck egg!).

Khaki Campbells usually have a quiet and

friendly nature and make excellent pets.  A pair

of Khaki Campbells in the backyard will keep

the area free of snails and other insect pests.

They can also play a vital role in pest and weed control on organic farms (but you will need

to keep them away from valuable edible plants – I once came home to find nothing left of

my silver beet plants but a row of white stalks!)

My ducks

Ducks are in my blood.  I grew up on a small market garden and poultry farm where my

father kept a number of poultry breeds (chooks, ducks and geese) but my favourites

(obviously!) are the Khaki Campbells.  One of my treasured possessions is my grand-

father’s medallion won by one of his ducks at Sydney Royal Show.

While I have kept Khaki Campbells for many years, a few years ago I purchased 2 breed-

ing pairs from Ted Carter in Adelaide.  Ted’s beautiful ducks have won Champion water-

fowl awards at every Royal Show in Australia.  One of the pairs I purchased from him had

placed at Melbourne Royal Show.  These ducks form the foundation of my present duck

flock.
